Find a quote you half remember…

About QuoteDecoded

Most quote websites give you a famous line and a name, and stop there. Many of those names are wrong, and almost none of them tell you what the line meant when it was first said. QuoteDecoded does the opposite: one quote at a time, we find the exact original words, trace who really said them and when, explain the situation they came from, and show how the meaning has drifted since.

We also do something no other quote site does: every page shows how to use the quote out loud. Our team includes people who coach public speaking and debate, so each explanation comes with a line you can actually say in a wedding toast, a graduation speech, a eulogy or a team talk, with timing and delivery tips.

Who it is for

Students who need a quote they can cite with confidence. Anyone writing a speech or a toast. Readers who saw a quote on social media and wondered whether Einstein really said that. And people who simply like knowing the story behind words they have heard all their lives.

How we work

QuoteDecoded is an independent site run by a small team of editors and speech coaches. Every quote is checked against a primary source, such as the original book, speech transcript, letter or recording, before it is published, and each page lists its sources. When the evidence points somewhere surprising, we say so; when we cannot find a reliable source, we label the quote Unsourced rather than guess. You can read the details in how we verify quotes.

We are not affiliated with any of the people, estates or institutions we write about. The site is free to read and is supported by advertising.
