About Epictetus
Epictetus was born a slave in Hierapolis, in what is now Turkey, and later freed. He taught Stoic philosophy in Rome and then in Nicopolis in Greece. He wrote nothing himself; his student Arrian recorded his teachings in the Discourses and the short handbook known as the Enchiridion.
