About Omar Khayyam

Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician and astronomer who worked on cubic equations and helped reform the calendar. The short four-line poems (rubaiyat) credited to him became famous in English through Edward FitzGerald’s free translation of 1859, which is more FitzGerald’s own poem than a word-for-word version.
